"The most dangerous place for a baby is in the mother's womb."

When I heard Cardinal Seán say this during his homily at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Washington, D.C. before going out to join the crowd for this year's March for Life, I stopped taking notes. Nothing else hit me as hard as those words and it finally clicked why all these people had come to the nation's capital.

To think that the womb, where babies are at their most vulnerable, where they develop and are nourished by their mothers for the first nine months they are on this planet, is the only place where they are not legally protected is not only not right; it's cruel.

As a young woman who has never been particularly maternal, I've always been told that once I eventually become pregnant, that motherly instinct kicks in. But what could be less motherly than to kill your own child?

That is what I thought of as I walked with over 400,000 people holding banners and signs protesting abortion. That's what I thought of when I talked to a high school girl whose mother chose to keep her baby, despite being only 18 years old when she became pregnant.

American playwright and author Eda J. Le Shan once said, "A new baby is like the beginning of all things--wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities."

When we commit abortion, we aren't only killing a baby, which is bad enough. We're also killing hope and possibilities.

CatholicTV will celebrate Catholic Schools Week the week of January 29th with local schools from the Archdiocese ofBoston. Each day, a different area Catholic school will join us for our Daily Mass in the CatholicTV chapel.

CatholicSchools Week, which celebrates its 40^th anniversary next year, is atime for students to celebrate their unique path of learning within the parish,community and nation, organizers state. Thetheme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics.Service.” The annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs allweek, which in 2012 is January 29th to February 5th. Thetheme focuses on the three priorities that Catholic schools establish that makethem stand out from other educational institutions. Children are aided in the development of their faith: they are taught not just the basics of Christianity, but also how to have a relationship with God.Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help eachchild reach his or her potential. Service, the giving of one’s time and effortto help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship.

Today is the 39th anniversary of Roe V. Wade, the court case that unconstitutionally declared abortion a legal right.

For Catholics, it is a Day of Prayer and a Day of Penance, and for all pro-lifers it is the date of the March for Life: an annual peaceful demonstration in our nation's capital. Attendees of the March for Life are many; the youth alone make up tens of thousands of the marchers.

CatholicTV is among them, in spirit and in person. Our crew in D.C. is down there sending frequent updates, and we will be airing the Youth Rally and Mass for Life at 12pm and again at 8pm.

Today's the day!

The Gist, the newest show from CatholicTV, premieres today at 10:30am (ET). We're incredibly excited over here. There's been a serious lack of relevant, quality Catholic programming that focuses on women. I had the privilege of being able to preview the premiere yesterday, and it's great. I'm so happy for everyone who's been working so hard on this show, especially Kate Andrews, the producer, Adam Stone who beautifully edited it, and Charles Green, who did the lighting and set design.

God is the Master of Surprises!

Our God is the Master of surprises!

Over the years I have learned to appreciate new beginnings. It can be sad or upsetting to leave behind the familiar and embark on uncharted paths, but every new turn offers us possibilities not known or realized in the past and surprises known only to God...and God is truly a God of Surprises. So this new year holds out for us many opportunities to grow as human beings, as Christians and as friends of Jesus!

To sit in the divine presence of Jesus as I try to do each day can be an eye-opener. If we bring to the Lord all of our hopes, our dreams and plans, our concerns and worries, our failures and disappointments, we can begin to see all of this in light of God's plan and His will for our lives. To try and makes sense of the complexities of life, the ups and downs of being the person God made us to be, the challenge of being Catholic disciples of Jesus - all of this can be overwhelming left on our own. But when we do this consistently in prayerful conversation, speaking and listening in our quiet "inner room," God does open our eyes to the meaning of our lives.

As we begin yet another new year, the common human experience is that times just goes faster and faster. We all think, "Where did last year go?" In the midst of the rush, the continual movement forward in time, forward towards our meeting with God face to face, we are blessed with time. In His patience God has given us more time to become who it is He created us to be. This we cannot do alone or in a vacuum. And so, The CatholicTV Network is there for you, seen in more than 11 million households. You are never alone: the Lord Jesus is with you and you are part of a wonderful family, the CatholicTV family.

We are all God's dear children and we are loved beyond measure. May 2012 be a wonderful year for you, even if it brings challenges and change...for one thing is certain: God's deep love for us in Jesus Christ will never change. Bonnie and I had the pleasure of appearing on The Good Catholic Life on Boston's 1060AM, The Station of the Cross last night.

Hosted by RCAB's Secretary for Catholic Media Scot Landry, The Good Catholic Life is a show for Bostonians by Bostonians about living a good, joy-filled, holy Catholic life here in Boston. Scot is joined by a different co-host every day, and we were privileged to be on the show with Father Matt Williams, the Director of the Office for New Evangelization of Youth and Young Adults.

Bonnie and I got the chance to talk about CatholicTV's great programming, in particular ChristmasTV, which starts at 8:30 every night, until the 24th, 25th, and 26th, when it lasts all day in our 3-day ChristmasTV Marathon.

Turn your TV on as you enjoy Christmas with your family, and listen to the great music and family friendly programming on ChristmasTV. Rockapella will be featured on CatholicTV's This is the Day this Friday at 10:30AM (EST) to present their new CD, "A Rockapella Holiday" and to perform some Christmas favorites.

Installation of Bishop Peter Libasci, LIVE on America’s Catholic Television Network®

Live on Thursday, December 8, , at 2 PM (ET), The CatholicTV® Network will broadcast the installation Mass of Bishop Peter Libasci as the 10th bishop of the Diocese of Manchester, NH. The Mass will be celebrated at Saint Joseph Cathedral with Cardinal Sean O’Malley and other bishops in attendance.

Since his ordination as bishop on June 1, 2007, Bishop-designate Libasci has served as the Episcopal Vicar for the Eastern Vicariate of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

Born November 9, 1951 in Queens, N.Y., Bishop Libasci attended Catholic schools throughout his childhood and attended seminary at Saint Meinrad Seminary, Indiana. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Rockville Centre on April 1, 1978. On December 10, 2004, Father Libasci was named Honorary Prelate to His Holiness Pope John Paul II with the title of monsignor. On April 3, 2007, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI appointed Rev. Msgr. Libasci auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. He was installed on June 1, 2007.

Mass Confusion Trailer

In case you haven't seen it yet, here is the trailer of the upcoming Mass Confusion pilot, to be aired on Thanksgiving.

I myself first got to see the pilot at the Catholic New Media Conference in Kansas City in the beginning of October, and I can't tell you how positive the reaction was from all the great folks at the conference. The show begged laughter from the people there, who ranged pretty broadly in age.

I was extremely proud of our production crew, and really happy for Greg and Jennifer Willits & Mac and Katherine Barron. There is a huge lack of wholesome, high quality content in television right now. I certainly don't think there's ever been a Catholic sitcom before (and believe me, I've been wanting one for a while now), so it's very cool and very exciting for CatholicTV to be working on this with the Willits and the Barrons.

If you want high quality, authentic Catholic content on television, then we need your help. On October 27, Cathy Rush, Head Women's Basketball Coach of Immaculata from 1972 to 1977will be on ClearVoice™ to discuss The Mighty Macs, a new film based on the true story of the1971-72 Immaculata College team that started in obscurity but became theoriginal Cinderella story in women's basketball. This team of pioneers wentfrom barely making that inaugural tournament to the first dynasty in theirgame.

A pioneer inwomen's sports, Cathy Rush was the basketball coach at Immaculata College forseven years, winning the first three Association for Intercollegiate Athleticsfor Women (AIAW) championships from 1972-74. At a time when women's basketballused archaic rules, Cathy taught her teams more aggressive tactics, similar to thoseused by men's teams, leading to excellent results.

Cathy’s overallaccomplishments, including a record of 149-15 (a .909 winning percentage),earned her induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in2008. She was also a 2000 inductee into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.

During her timeat Immaculata, Cathy led players such as Theresa Shank Grentz, Rene MuthPortland, and Marianne Crawford Stanley, who became successful basketballcoaches as well. In 1975, she coached the U.S. women's basketball to the PanAmerican Games gold medal. After retiring as a coach, Cathy became the firstfemale commentator for women's basketball on national television in 1978. Shehas worked with NBC, CBS, ESPN, CBN, and PRISM.

The Mighty Macs stars CarlaGugino as Cathy Rush; David Boreanaz as her husband, NBA referee Ed Rush;Marley Shelton as Sister Sunday; and Academy Award, Tony Award & Primetime Emmy Award winner EllenBurstyn as Mother St. John. The film was written, directed, and produced by TimChambers. The film's executive producers are Pat Croce, the former president ofthe NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, and Vince Curran, a successful businessman andformer basketball star at Penn. Curran and Chambers are founders and partnersof Quaker Media.

We had the pleasure of having Amanda Lopez in the studio yesterday to shoot a musical performance. Amanda won the Voice of an Angel contest in 2008. Along with Caro Fernandez, Deanna Pavese and Matt Sanchez (also winners of the contest), Amanda has been a part of the Stand United campaign, which revolves around a song of the same name, written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11th, 2001.

Part of the promotion of the song has been an effort to rekindle the unity the nation felt after 9/11. Downloaders of the free song have been encouraged to donate to the 9/11 charity of their choice, and fans are asked to submit pictures of themselves "Standing United" with their loved ones.

Amanda just started as a freshman at the Boston Conservatory, and was able to come in to our studios and shoot a solo version of the patriotic song. She's a very busy young woman with her school schedule, but was eager to come in for an interview and shooting of her song before she had to head back to class. FatherMahoney was ordained a Priest in 1956. He was assigned to St. Francis de SalesParish in Charlestown in 1968 and has served as pastor since 1978. Pro Life Month: Finding the Courage to Talk About Abortion

Have you ever heard of the "spiral of silence"? Put simply, this theory says that people are less likely to voice their opinion about something if they believe they are in the minority. I always pictured an Odyssey-style whirlpool or a sinkhole when learning about this theory in college communications classes. When one person is silent, others around her lose their courage to speak, and still more around them lose their courage to speak. The result is an ever increasing number of people being pulled into silence because of a pervasive fear.

You probably didn't know that most people are pro life. If you're anything like me, you may know rationally that at least half of Americans are pro life, but you still feel like you're in the minority. It's easy to dismiss abortion as an off-limits topic, especially if you think no one agrees with you. But the way we fight the spiral of silence is by letting people around us know that they are not alone in their convictions.

Reflections after CNMC '11

This weekend was a fruitful one on all accounts! Here at CatholicTV our Telethon was even more successful than last year. As always, our friends have been so good to us. We are so grateful for your support, for the friendship of our patroness St. Thérèse of Lisieux and most importantly for God's continual stewardship of our mission here at CatholicTV.

I, however, was not here for the Telethon, but was attending the equally fruitful Catholic New Media Conference in Kansas City, KS. I was blessed to meet some great folks in the world of Catholic New Media (as well as fans of the media producers that were represented there this weekend). We tackled some important issues facing Catholic Media, namely the need to continually produce relevant, entertaining and faithful content. Everyone had important insights to offer, and we all left feeling rejuvenated and encouraged in our missions.

I loved hearing from Lisa Hendey of Catholic Mom, Pat Gohn, Matt Warner & Jeff Geerling of flockNote, Sr. Anne Flanagan (the nunblogger) and Seàn Patrick Lovett of Vatican Radio. I was especially excited to see the reaction of the audience to the CatholicTV produced sitcom, Mass Confusion, starring Greg & Jennifer Willits and Mac & Katherine Barron. It was clearly a hit at the conference, so we'll be looking forward to your reaction when it airs on Thanksgiving.

At the close of his keynote, Seàn Patrick Lovett exhorted us all to use our new media prowess to "go and do something beautiful for God." We're excited to do that here at CatholicTV, and I have no doubt that everyone else at the conference will do the same.

The Catholic New Media Conference (CNMC) is a festive, educational, and international conference focused on evangelization and building community through the use of new media. The event is designed to connect, guide and inform Catholic communicators as a response to the Church’s call for new evangelization.

“The 2011 CNMC will focus particularly on social media, its impact on culture, and how the Church and its institutions can effectively use it,” says Fr. Roderick Vonhögen, CEO of SQPN. “We will be exploring how social media can be used with quality content; authentic catechesis and, a true sense of mission,” he says.

When we begin the new Church Year with the First Sunday of Advent, some of the words we use at Mass will change. And words are very important.

While the truths of our Faith are ageless, the liturgical books continually evolve to serve us at prayer. Latin is the preferred language, not only of the Church but also in scholarship, politics, philosophy, science and the arts. The Second Vatican Council maintained the Church’s preference for Latin but also allowed for a “more extended use of the vernacular,” or common language of the people, to be used.

Over the years since the Council, our use of English at Mass has helped us to pray with more understanding and to deepen the spiritual connections between the liturgy and everyday life. But still, how we speak to God must show our profound reverence for the One who made us and saves us. How we speak of God should reflect that reverence and be given greater care than the more casual way we communicate with others. Hence the call for a more literal translation of the words we use when we pray as the Church.

Pilot For Catholic Sitcom Recorded In Georgia

CONYERS—The kitchen table where the Willits family usually eats is covered this morning with cables, batteries, audio and recording paraphernalia—equipment to start filming a possible Catholic sitcom.

A crew of six and Father Robert Reed, president of CatholicTV, have flown in from Boston, turning the Willits’ home into a set for the pilot of the show tentatively titled “Mass Confusion.” What began as a casual idea has turned this June morning into a full-fledged effort to create Catholic, family-friendly entertainment and hopefully inspire others to get involved.

Last year Greg and Jennifer Willits, who host “The Catholics Next Door” on SiriusXM satellite radio, approached Father Reed with an idea for a new program: a humorous Catholic sitcom reflecting family life and its rewards and struggles.

Greg said that like many turns in the road his family has already experienced, this was an idea he pitched expecting to be turned down. But their steps in faith seem to lead to more doors opening.

It began with The Rosary Army, a rosary-making apostolate they started in 2003, and then “That Catholic Show,” an educational video series they produced, and then a podcast, which was picked up by the Catholic Channel and turned into their current radio show, “The Catholics Next Door.” Now it may be a Catholic family show inspired by their lives as parents with five children.

“We’re excited and scared about this, but that’s pretty much been the case with every new endeavor we’ve taken on,” Greg wrote by e-mail. “When we started Rosary Army, we felt the same way. When we started podcasting, we felt the same way. When we went to radio, we felt the same way. It makes no sense that we, without any experience in this area whatsoever, should be doing this, but it seems with the doors open, God wants us to at least give it a try.”

After getting a green light from Father Reed and CatholicTV, the Willits began writing a script with their friends Mac and Katherine Barron, another Georgia-based couple involved in new media with their podcast “Catholic in a Small Town.” The Barrons are the parents of three.

The two couples ran through their lines as the CatholicTV crew checked audio levels and framed shots. Director Robert Kaminski called “action,” and the group dove headfirst into an experience that was mostly new to all of them. Jennifer Willits has been in front of the camera before for “That Catholic Show,” but filming the pilot added a new level of excitement and pressure.

“It was a very ‘mom and pop’ production,” said Jennifer about “That Catholic Show.” “The only other person in the room was Greg.”

“It adds to the excitement and the weight of the scene, having to interact with a lot of people,” she added.

Mac Barron, who has emceed the national Catholic New Media Celebration for the past two years, had to become familiar with the dynamic of rehearsing lines, taking direction and reshooting scenes over and over.

“It is different being in front of the camera than doing the podcasts,” Barron said. “In the podcast we get to call the shots and we don’t have to rehearse.”

“It is very exciting,” he added. “It’s great that CatholicTV has been so supportive.”

Filmed in a style similar to primetime shows like “The Office” and “Modern Family,” the show focuses on the two Catholic couples and their families. Greg said the idea for this venture isn’t to teach Catholic doctrine but to be entertaining.

“There is a lot of Catholic catechesis out there but not a lot of Catholic entertainment. We want to prove that it can be done,” he said. “This is going to be a pilot, simply a proof of concept to hopefully inspire others in Catholic and secular media to push the envelope a bit creatively.”

While it was exciting, it was also a bit of a sacrifice for the two families, who used some of their vacation time to film the pilot, not to mention the Willits’ home being taken over as a studio and set.

The Willits, members of St. Pius X Church in Conyers, asked for prayers that the show would be an inspiration for others and have a positive impact on Catholic new media.

The pilot is expected to be released this fall online through the CatholicTV website (www.catholictv.com). CatholicTV is also available on some cable and satellite TV networks, including Sky Angel in Georgia.

“Our goal and our hope is to get 1 million views, which as you may know, has so far been pretty much impossible for online Catholic media,” wrote Greg. “If we can reach that goal, then we’ll have something to work with if we decide to shoot more episodes since at that point we’ll need to secure some sort of funding to do so.”

Priest Will Discuss Miracles Involving Babies, Battles With Demons, and More on CatholicTV Talk Show

On May 13th, Fr. Stefan Starzynski will be interviewed on the live CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”.

Fr. Starzynski is the author of the book, “Miracles: Healing For A Broken World”. In the book, Fr. Starzynski recounts numerous episodes when he personally experienced miracles, often in totally unexpected places.

The book includes stories of tiny infants facing life-threatening medical conditions, of people battling demons and disease, of Fr. Starzynski’s own experience overcoming depression, and more. Fr. Starzynski’s book also includes miraculous testimonies from over twenty individuals and families whose lives have been touched by God through Father Starzynski's ministry.

Fr. Starzynski is a priest in the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia. Widely known for his healing Masses, he is also a retreat leader and Cursillo chaplain. He is an advocate for the unborn, and the founding member of the Paul Stefan Foundation, an organization that aids women in crisis pregnancies.

The Family Rosary Retreat will also be discussed on This is the Day. The Family Rosary retreat is a retreat aimed at encouraging good communication and improving relationships within the family in a Catholic Christian context. This retreat will take place on June 4th, in Easton, Massachusetts. The retreat is one of many organized by Holy Cross Family Ministries. Author of ‘Dead Man Walking’ Sister Helen Prejean To Appear on CatholicTV News Magazine Show

On May 19th, Christine Caswell’s interview of Sister Helen Prejean will air during the CatholicTV news magazine show “ClearVoice”.

Sr. Helen is the author of the book “Dead Man Walking”, which inspired the film of the same name starring Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon. The film depicts Sr. Helen’s interactions with a death row inmate. Christine Caswell is co-host of ClearVoice.

In her interview with Christine Caswell, Sr. Helen talks about forgiveness and the murder case of Jeffrey Curley, whose father Robert Curley initially advocated for the return of the death penalty to Massachusetts. Curley later changed his mind and has since spoken out against the death penalty.

Sister Prejean also talks about how victims’ families need to be heard. She briefly mentions how she regretted not talking to the victims’ families sooner in the case of Elmo Sonnier who, in 1978 was convicted of murdering Loretta Bourque and David LeBlanc.

May 19th’s episode of ClearVoice will also include an interview of Fr. William Palardy, Rector of Blessed John XXIII Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts. The seminary trains priests and specializes in later-aged vocations.

CatholicTV To Use Same High Definition Production Switcher as Major Networks

Starting May 5th, CatholicTV will begin using a new switcher which will allow CatholicTV to increase its production quality and to have equal or better live effects capabilities as the major networks in America.

The new switcher will be used for the first time at CatholicTV to produce the game show WOW: The CatholicTV Challenge (WOW), which teaches the Catholic faith and features 3rd-grade contestants. Previous seasons of the series have garnered both Telly and Pixie awards.

The new switcher is produced by Grass Valley, a company which serves the broadcast and professional video industries.

Once the new switcher is in use, CatholicTV will have the capabilities to have a ticker streaming across the bottom of the screen or on the sides and will also have the capabilities to have live split screens which are often seen on national news broadcasts and on sports shows. These are among a host of new capabilities CatholicTV’s production staff will have access to.

CatholicTV Production Manager Pete Kaminski said of the new HD switcher “it gives us the capability to do more creative things with more [video] sources.”

Third Grade Students From 7 Different New England Schools Will Appear on CatholicTV Game Show

Starting May 5th, CatholicTV will begin annual production of its game show starring third grade students from various Catholic schools. The show is called “WOW: The CatholicTV Challenge” (WOW). Recording of the show should be completed by May 20th and this year will be the first time that WOW is recorded in full high-definition.

Once production begins, approximately 100 students will squeeze into a television studio for each episode. The set for WOW is full of computer-controlled lights, a starlit background, and music playing in the background.

During the week of May 4th, CatholicTV will air a made-for-television special program about the upcoming film “There Be Dragons” which was directed by Roland Joffé, the director of the 1986 film “The Mission” which starred Robert DeNiro.

The television special to air on CatholicTV is called “There Be Dragons: The Power of Forgiveness”.

There Be Dragons tells the story of two childhood friends who find themselves on opposite sides of the war. One chooses the path of peace and becomes a priest while the other chooses a life of jealousy and revenge. Each struggles to find the faith and forgiveness to overcome the forces tearing them apart. The priest depicted in the film is St. Josemaria Escriva.

“There Be Dragons: The Power of Forgiveness” features footage of the upcoming film which has already been shown at special screenings across the country and opens in theatres on May 6th.

CatholicTV Series Explores Religious Order Recently Assigned To Minister To 60,000 Students in Boston’s Fenway Area

On April 19th, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Boston, announced a major expansion of campus ministry in the Fenway area of Boston.

With the support of Archdiocese, the Brotherhood of Hope (BOH) will launch a new initiative which would expand the BOH’s outreach from two universities to about ten in the Fenway area of Boston.

The BOH is a relatively young religious order (founded 1980) which specializes in campus ministry at secular colleges and universities.

CatholicTV recently launched a television series exploring the work of the BOH called “Hope on Campus”. The series includes interviews of BOH members as well as student-produced footage of the BOH’s activities and work on campus. The series has episodes titled “Mission to Tanzania”, “Sex and Life on Campus”, “Opening Week Evangelization”, and much more. Hope on Campus airs each week at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV cable outlets.

“As their name implies, they bring hope to students in a very personal, individual, and joyful manner”, said Laura Moreno, a medical student at Boston University.

Great things sometimes come in big packages, but also in small ones as well. Recently, a southwest Florida university unveiled a 54-ton sculpture of the Virgin Mary. Back in the beginning of the spring hundreds gathered at Ave Maria University for the unveiling. It took the sculptor two years to carve the 35-foot-tall, 31-foot-wide sculpture.

He actually started with an 80-ton block of marble that came from the same quarry Michelangelo used for the Pieta and David sculptures. The sculpture was blessed by Bishop Frank Dewane of the diocese of Venice.

This would not be what I would call a blink or a blip on the screen, but a tremendous testimony to the Faith of an artist to the powerful intercession and maternal care of the Blessed Mother of God. This May, we honor Mary who is also our mother, the Mother of the Church.

Our Catholic Faith is so rich and multifaceted. Some years ago we decided that there were many missed opportunities to communicate the message of the Gospel if we were to only produce programs that fit into the typical television schedule. As you know, a typical TV show is usually thirty or sixty minutes with commercials or public service announcements interspersed throughout. So we decided to introduce a new and simple innovation called "Blink." Essentially a Blink is a short program of three to
five minutes which can then be strung together to form a half hour block or run by itself to fill time until the next scheduled program.

These mini-programs, which are sometimes over "in the blink of an eye," have afforded us so many opportunities to highlight one aspect or another of the rich tapestry of our Faith and bring into your home, or onto a smaller screen, a particular individual who might not have otherwise become part of the CatholicTV family.

From June 14-16, CatholicTV will exhibit at The Cable Show in Chicago.

This is the fourth year that CatholicTV has exhibited at this industry gathering. The Cable Show 2011, is hosted by the National Cable & Telecommunication Association (NCTA). This year’s event is the 60th Annual Cable Show and is Co-Chaired by Discovery’s David Zaslav and Suddenlink’s Jerry Kent.
The Cable Show will include attendees from over 52 foreign countries and will also be attended by cable operators such as Time Warner, Comcast, Cox Communications, and many more.

CatholicTV’s Mother’s Day Programming Will Include Documentary of Married Mother and Canonized Saint Gianna Molla

In celebration of Mother’s Day, CatholicTV will air a documentary about St. Gianna Beretta Molla on May 8th.

St. Gianna is known for refusing an abortion and a hysterectomy when she was pregnant with her fourth child and doctors discovered a tumor in her uterus. She opted for a risky operation to remove the tumor that preserved the life of her child rather than undergo a hysterectomy. Six days after giving birth to her baby she died from complications. St. Gianna was the last saint to be canonized by Pope John Paul II.

CatholicTV will air the documentary about St. Gianna at 8:30 a.m. and again at 8:30 p.m. on May 8th. This will air at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV cable outlets. The documentary previously aired on St. Gianna’s feast day which is April 28th.

Holy Week and Jesus' Passion- A Note From Fr. Reed

Betrayed by a kiss, denied by friends, abandoned, alone, abused, falsely accused, judged, condemned, stripped, whipped, spat upon, crowned with thorns, burdened by the cross, mocked and insulted, thirsty, dying…perhaps it all had to come to pass just like this so that no one on the face of the earth would ever be able to say that Jesus doesn't understand my suffering, that Jesus doesn't know my pain, that Jesus just doesn't get it.

Jesus gets it alright - He understands all of our suffering and then some. Jesus has "been there and done that" in larger measure than most of us can begin to imagine. He took all of this upon Himself out of love for us, and He took all of this upon Himself because sometimes we are the ones who betray Him; we are the ones whose spirit is willing but whose flesh is weak. Sometimes we are the ones who give false testimony, who are poor in the judgments we make. Sometimes we are the ones at whose hands others suffer. Sometimes we are the ones who mock and insult others. Sometimes we are the ones who deny Him and abuse and abandon Him as He is found in those around us.

And in spite of all of this, God’s love for us has no end, and His mercy is forever. The story of the suffering of Jesus is a violent one, but at its heart is a love story: a story of God's love for His people and His willingness to give everything to show us the depths of that love.

As we enter the week called "holy," may the love and mercy of the Lord Jesus make us holy and bring us to the joy of His resurrection.

CatholicTV Uses Advanced Software to Increase Productivity

CatholicTV is now using an advanced software to increase productivity and assist in its transition to high definition broadcasting.

The new software, made by Dalet, is also used by ABC, FOX, NPR, and many other innovative international media companies.

The new software allows CatholicTV to transition its old programming from tape format to file format. This means, among other things, that members of the production staff will be able to bring up all of CatholicTV’s older programs instantly at their computers rather than have to search through a room full of tapes.

The new software (a.k.a. media asset management system) will also allow CatholicTV to more easily distribute its content to new outlets such as the iPhone. In other words, the new software will make it easier for CatholicTV to reach more viewers.
“I like the way it makes the workflow more efficient and simpler. It streamlines the whole process of production” said Tim Stonesifer, a member of the CatholicTV production staff.

“It’s a huge step forward in productivity” said Mark Quella, CatholicTV’s Chief Engineer.

CatholicTV created its own social networking site, iCatholic.com in 2010. Since then, members have formed an online prayer community where they discuss their Catholic faith, and share pictures, stories, and videos.

CatholicTV recently celebrated another social media milestone. The network reached 20,000 fans who “like” CatholicTV on its very active Facebook page. The CatholicTV Network’s official Facebook fan page launched in February of 2009, giving viewers and supporters a new tool to share their passion for CatholicTV programming.

Recent postings at the fan page have included video of Fr. James Martin, Jason Evert, Fr. Reed in Vatican City, excerpts from CatholicTV’s news magazine show “ClearVoice”, a video tour of the CatholicTV studios, and much more.

Bishop-elect Bartchak has held a variety of positions throughout his 29-year-long priesthood.

He’s also celebrated Mass each month for the men in the Erie County Prison. He has been a confessor at the Catholic chapel at the largest retail shopping center in northwestern Pennsylvania.

To be a good pastor, a diocesan bishop especially needs the help of the priests who are so closely connected with God’s people in our parishes and schools. Bishop-elect Bartchak’s college studies were at St. Mark Seminary and Gannon University, Erie, PA, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy in 1977. He also studied for the priesthood at Christ the King Seminary, East Aurora, NY, receiving a Master of Arts degree in Theology in 1981. He studied canon law at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where he received the Licentiate degree in 1989 and the Doctorate degree in 1992. At the time Bartchak was named the new Bishop, he was Judicial Vicar of the Diocese of Erie, PA.

On April 1st, the Center for FaithJustice (CFJ) will be discussed on the live CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”.

The CFJ is a unique ministry which assists in community service with youth and young adults, educates people about social justice, sponsors research on social justice, and much more. Widian Nicola from the CFJ will be interviewed on This is the Day.

An interview with Bishop Richard Stika of Knoxville will also air on This is the Day. Bishop Stika heads a very young diocese which was founded in 1988. The diocese is also unique because of the rapid growth of its Hispanic Catholic population, which “if the estimates are correct and there are about 50,000 new Hispanic immigrants in the area, their number nearly doubles the area’s current official Catholic population.”

Bishop Stika considers Pope John Paul II his “episcopal grandfather” because the pope ordained Cardinal Rigali an archbishop in 1985, and the cardinal ordained Monsignor Stika a bishop. Over 10,000 Sign Petition to Spread CatholicTV as Pope Calls on Church Leaders to Speak ‘New Language’ of Mass Media

Over 10,000 people have signed a petition used to encourage cable and satellite television providers to add CatholicTV to their channel line ups.

CatholicTV employees have travelled to conferences, retreats, and trade shows in many different states collecting names for its petition.

CatholicTV supporters recently made an impact in Worcester, Massachusetts, where dozens of attendees at a Catholic Men’s Conference signed letters requesting that CatholicTV be added to Charter Cable’s lineup. A few months later, CatholicTV was added to Charter Cable’s lineup.

Interestingly, the number of petition signers crossed 10,000 around the same time (March 1st) as Pope Benedict addressed participants of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

During Santorum’s interview with ClearVoice’s John Monahan, Santorum discussed his life since leaving the U.S. Senate. Santorum talked about focusing more time on his wife and 7 children after leaving office. Who Will Continue To Tell the Great News?

In this darkness of the night, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary walked to the tomb. They went there in shock before the dawning of that first day of the week. How very sad and numb they must have been; they probably had cried their eyes out all night because the One who had reached out to them with compassion, the Friend who had given them hope was now dead. They, and many others, would have followed Jesus to the end of the world – but life had become almost pointless.

There at Jesus’ tomb, they encountered a messenger from God, an angel who reassured them: I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. With that, the truth flooded their minds and they knew that Jesus had been raised and that He is theLord of Life. Confused, yet overjoyed, they returned to the apostles to tell the good news.

As we approach the great festival of Easter, we should ask ourselves this question: Who will continue to tell this great news? On March 22nd, Michelle Buckman will be interviewed on the live CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”.

Michelle is the author of the Catholic novel Rachel’s Contrition. Michelle was astounded at the success of the book especially since very little marketing had been done.

In an interview with the National Catholic Register, Michelle talked about how her novel reached #1 in the Women’s fiction category in October 2010. When asked if she had done a “big promotional event”, Michelle replied, “not unless you count the continuous novena to St. Therese that I had going for this book since the end of August.”

Here we go again; Lent is just around the corner. I must admit, I sort of like Lent. It’s a sparse and unique season; it has a great prize at its end. Let’s face it…we’re dying for spring, and Easter and new Life. I mean, we are literally dying!

So, here we go again. Our annual season of owning up to sin, of asking God to help us change our lives. A time of self denial, of giving and of prayer for a better life. Perhaps you are aware that the word ‘Lent’ comes from the old English word for Spring, ‘Lenten’ or ‘lengthen’ – so called because the days get longer, the darkness recedes and there is more light. So, these forty days are a perfect chance to become more like Jesus Who is the light of our world; to become more what we were created to be…to develop a deep friendship with the God who created us. And the Lord reminds us of three ways to do just that: fasting, giving alms and prayer.

As you know, it all begins with ashes. Let’s not forget that this sign imposed on our heads is really a call to interior change and a reminder that life in this world is finite, but God is eternal. Herein lies the great opportunity of these coming forty days: come back to Jesus; live more as He lived this life…always with the hope that we will live with Him in glory!

So, however you get from ashes to Easter, that will be up to you this year. Really try to make this Lent a time when you become more like the Lord Jesus. Don’t be afraid to change and to you offer yourself, your life to God and to those around you. Lent is a wonderful opportunity. CatholicTV Viewers Form Unique Online Prayer Community

In 2010, the CatholicTV® Network launched its own social networking site at iCatholic.com. Since its inception, members have formed a unique prayer and support community.

One member from New Mexico recently started a discussion at the site’s forums requesting prayers for his daughter who suffered cardiac arrest after a sudden illness. Many members began praying and the girl recently was able to smile after recovering from a coma.

One member from New York state wrote: “Wonderful news about Kristin* smiling! Maybe she's seeing Jesus and can't tell us ... you never know. I don't even know her, but I really love this little girl. May God continue to improve her condition, healing her of everything, one step at a time. All in His loving Will.”

Not only have iCatholic members formed a prayer community, but they also use the site to ask advice from one another and share stories about their faith. For example, in one recent popular discussion, a member from Hudson, Massachusetts asked how to best deal with workplace gossip. Another member from Salt Lake City shared the story of how he and his wife experienced the supernatural scent of roses when visiting the relics of St. Therese of Lisieux.

Starting this April, CatholicTV will air new episodes of the vocations-promoting series “Come Follow Me”.

Come Follow Me is a television program in which priests share the stories of their lives as priests and how they decided to become priests.

During one episode, Bishop Robert McManus of Worcester, Massachusetts told the story of the day he found out he was going to be named the new Bishop.

On that fateful day, then Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo called McManus and said, “The Holy Father loves you very much,” “uh-huh” replied McManus. Montalvo continued, “the Holy Father has assigned you to the Diocese of Worcester. Do you accept?” “Yes I do.” Replied McManus. “Very good”, said Montalvo. “Write a letter to the Holy Father and tell him that you accept, and call me later on in the week.” McManus and show host, Fr. James Mazzone laughed as McManus recalled the story.

On March 1st, Christopher Kraker will be interviewed on the live CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”.

Christopher is Associate Director at NET Ministries, which is best known for sending teams of young evangelists all over the country to give retreats to high school and middle-school-aged students.

During a recent training session for youth ministry, Kraker talked about how he and his wife had to make so many sacrifices for the sake of youth ministry, yet in the end, he felt that it was worth it.

Robert Allard will also be interviewed on This is the Day. Allard is the Director of Apostles of Divine Mercy, an organization whose purpose is “to spread Our Lord’s message of Divine Mercy.”

Allard has written for national magazines and newspapers and has appeared many times on radio and television. He and his wife Linda travel with one of the largest displays of Divine Mercy items and books.

Allard, who founded the Apostles of Divine Mercy, had a dramatic awakening in 1993 after being away from the faith for twenty-five years. He was then led to obtain and read the diary of St. Faustina. After finally going to Confession after about a 28-year absence and celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday for the first time, he experienced an outpouring of an ocean of graces like Jesus has promised to those who turn to His Mercy on that day.

The September 2010 issue of OFA took a look at a popular musician, Lady Gaga. The article, which is full of bright graphics and photos, explores the career and life of the popular musician, and uses scripture passages and quotes from the catechism to teach readers about the real purpose of art, how “true happiness is not found in riches”, and more.

Fr. Daly will discuss his unique ministry on This the Day. Father Daly will also be the featured guest on the CatholicTV program “Going My Way”, on which he will be interviewed, and will sing alongside co-hosts Fr. Chris Hickey, and Fr. Paul Rouse. This episode of Going My Way will air later this year.

Youth minister and teacher Kevin Leaver will also be interviewed on This is the Day. Kevin is a Spanish teacher and is also discerning a potential call to the priesthood. He will discuss his discernment on This is the Day.

Successor to the Apostles- Fr. Reed on Bishop-Elect Chris Coyne

A few weeks ago it was a thrill for all of us here at the CatholicTV® Network to receive word that “one of our own” had been named a successor to the Twelve Apostles.

Once pastor of St. Margaret Mary in Westwood, Massachusetts, Bishop Christopher Coyne has been called by Pope Benedict XVI to serve as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Bishop Coyne served as a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston for almost 25 years. During that time, he demonstrated skill and gentleness as a pastor, teacher and leader.

I am sure it is those very qualities that will make Chris, along with Archbishop Buechlein, a fine shepherd in Indianapolis.

Bishop-elect Chris Coyne has served not only as a parish priest, but also as professor of liturgy and homiletics, as well as director of the Pre-Theology Program at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachsetts; as director for the Office of Worship, as well as cabinet secretary for communications and archdiocesan spokesman for the Archdiocese of Boston. Of course, the new bishop has willingly offered the CatholicTV Network a hand over the years in producing a number of series for television broadcast. Employing his skill as a teacher and expert in sacred liturgy, Bishop Coyne can be seen on CatholicTV in several series. Sacred Space returns to CatholicTV cable this March. Catholic Priests Will Make Oscar Predictions During Special Episode of Their Movie Review Show on CatholicTV

During the week beginning February 21^st, two Catholic priests, Fr. Bill Kelly and Fr. “Chip” Hines, co-hosts of the CatholicTV movie review show “Spotlight”, will share their opinions of Oscar winners and will offer commentary in preparation for the upcoming 83nd Annual Academy Awards on February 27th, 2011.

Fr. Bill and Fr. Chip will predict winners for best picture, director, actor, actress, supporting actor, and supporting actress during this episode of Spotlight. The idea of the Spotlight show originated when a fellow priest overheard Fr. Chip and Fr. Bill arguing about who deserved the award for Best Supporting Actress in 2008. The priest who overheard them said, “you two should have your own show”.

Since its introduction in 2009, the show has gained national attention and the two priests were invited to make a monthly appearance on Wendy Wiese’s ON CALL Relevant Radio show.

This special Oscars episode of Spotlight will air at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV during the week of February 21^st at the following times (Eastern): Monday 6 p.m. Tuesday 8 p.m. Wednesday 4 a.m. Friday 4:30 p.m. Saturday 12:30 and 10 p.m.
