January 2nd is a good day to talk about New Year's resolutions. Most of us are back to work or school and our ability to make changes for the year is far more realistic. So what does 2014 hold for us as Christians, Catholics and seekers of God? Losing ten pounds? Working out? Quitting smoking? Maybe. Are these the things that the Lord requires of us? Maybe, but let's not let the demands of culture dictate our resolutions this year. Let's look to the Lord.

Only in God do we fine newness and truth. When we look to God to effect conversion in our lives, we cannot be disappointed. That's our problem every year. We try to change ourselves to be better in the eyes of society, instead of turning ourselves over to God to be changed into something pleasing in the eyes of the Lord.

So what does God require of us in the new year? We don't need to look any further than the Scriptures.

Micah 6:8 (NRSV) says:

He has told you, O mortal, what is good;

and what does the Lord require of you

but to do justice, and to love kindness,

and to walk humbly with your God?

The New International Version translates it as "to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God", and that translation may be more familiar to you. Let's think about some resolutions based on these three simple requirements of God.

Act Justly

In our day to day lives it is easy to not only forget those who are not treated justly in society, but also to forget the part we play in that. This year, identify a group of oppressed people and offer your year to them. Remember them in your prayers and make a real change in their interest.

Maybe it is victims of human trafficking and slavery (btw, January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month). Around the world, people are forced into labor to create goods that people thoughtlessly consume (including you and I, sometimes). Women and children are sold into sexual slavery, children in West Africa are sold as slaves to work on chocolate plantations, and entire families in South Asia are held as slaves in collateral against loans. Boycott companies that you know participate in slavery or forced labor. Buy fair trade and local goods that you can trust. Learn more about slavery in the 21st century.

Maybe it's women, children or minorities and immigrants. Support businesses that uphold the interests of the "widow, the orphan and the stranger", those three groups God commands us to serve and protect throughout the Old Testament. Volunteer at a local women's shelter or orphanage, and support just, fair and charitable immigration reform.

In addition to major commitments like the above, make some personal changes too. Examine the prejudices in your life. Rid your language of sexism, racism or any other kind of hate. Treat your family justly. Be truthful at school and work. Make a point to give credit where credit is due.

Love Mercy

How can we show mercy to those in our lives? One of the most important ways we love is by showing mercy to people around us. Most people in our lives are aching for mercy, and we can each give it to them.

Turn the conflicts in your life over to God, and ask for the grace to forgive. Some hurts are too painful for us to attempt to forgive them on our own, and God offers to take on those burdens. Let go of grudges - especially the ones you can't remember the causes of. Say prayers for people you've spent time and energy resenting.

Be understanding when someone is occasionally rude or annoying. Don't let their rudeness result in bitterness from you and thus start a vicious cycle. Just let it go. Who knows, your mercy may help to heal whatever caused them to be rude in the first place.

Be fair with your family. Don't disproportionately punish your kids or spouse for wrong doing. Don't be afraid to communicate when something really disappoints you, but let forgiveness and mercy be what dictates your encounters.

Spend time in prayer for people who try your patience. Then take that a step further and spend physical time with them as well. Make a point to compliment them. Sometimes people who try our patience are caustic or difficult precisely because they have been rejected by others. Sometimes all they need is a little mercy and acceptance.

Stop judging people.

Walk humbly

Probably the most important thing God requires of us is humility. God so loved us that God humbled Godself and took on human form. Jesus' ultimate act of power was one of radical humility: death on a cross. It was through humility that Christ destroyed death and sin; not boasting and arrogance.

Part of what gets in the way of humility is our sense of entitlement to certain indulgences. This is where losing ten pounds or quitting smoking may come in. God has given us our bodies so that we will care for and steward them. Out of "pride of ownership" do we abuse them through sloth or gluttony or lust? This year, identify an indulgence that you think gets in the way of your humility (maybe something you give up for Lent year after year?), and try and kick the habit entirely.

Is there an area in your life through which you boast your personal circumstances? Perhaps the clothes you wear or the gadgets you use show off your wealth or success. Perhaps your social media account has become less about communication with friends and family and more about sounding off about yourself. Think about that personal area of temptation for you and see if you can counteract it. Can you limit your time on social media, or limit yourself to only one platform? Can you try to shop at second hand stores for part of your wardrobe? Can you limit yourself to one device?

We never do anything on our own. Most importantly, of course, we never do anything without God's help. But we also rarely do anything without the help of someone near us. Part of the "American dream" is a type of individualism that boasts starting from nothing and building one's own success. The reality is that this is a myth. We don't build our own successes. We are helped by our parents, our communities, our parishes and our local and state government. When we achieve something at work or at school, we almost always have someone else to thank for that success. Start meditating on your need for other people in all areas of your life. And when you're praised for your successes, start sharing the credit. You didn't do it alone.

He has been celebrating Mass with us for over 30 years and has brightened our lives for all that time. His funeral was celebrated on Friday across the street at St Patrick's in Watertown.

He was scheduled to celebrate Mass for us today, and Father Thomas Kopp from Sudbury kindly stepped up to take over his Mass. He was joined by Mary and Dan Farrell, Fr Hannon's sister and brother-in-law, who always joined Fr Hannon for Mass. He offered the Mass for Fr Hannon and also paid tribute to him in his homily, which you can watch below. Thanks for your prayers for Fr Hannon and his family, especially Mary and Dan.

People would ask what drove her to work so tirelessly among the poor, the addicted, and the outcast in society. And she always said, we are here for them because we are the ones in need. We are here because we are hungry for God. We're the ones who are hungry. And Dorothy Day wrote in her book how so many people often said to her - how nice it is that you feed the poor. But she always would say- 'I know in my own heart, I am the one being fed by Jesus Christ'.

We know how hard it can be to trust the programs your kids watch on television. Even cartoons these days aren't risk free. That's why we make sure to air fun, faithful, and family friendly options for your kids throughout the week. We're here to educate your kids about the faith, get them laughing and singing, and enforce the values you work so hard to teach them, like kindness, patience, and charity.

Check out some of the programs we offer below, and keep your eye on our Twitter and Facebook accounts for updates on special programs meant for your kids. And moms, we've got you covered too! Be sure to watch The Gist with Rachel Balducci, Danielle Bean, and Carolee McGrath for some real talk about marriage, motherhood, and being a woman in the 21st century.

Not only did we kick off our first ever Summer Season, but we brought you great coverage of World Youth Day 2013 in July. In June we shot brand new episodes of The Gist, which we're excited to share as part of our Fall season. August brought the Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention in Texas for which we provided all day coverage. We also sent a crew to the Catholic Marketing Network to spread the word about CatholicTV, see what's up in the world of Catholic marketing and publishing, and get interviews with today's Catholic authors and media figures. The opening of the Cool Globes exhibit in Boston gave us a great opportunity to shoot some segments on environmental stewardship, so keep your eye out for those!

This fall we're excited to bring back The Gist, One Billion Stories, We've Got To Talk, Going My Way, WOW: The CatholicTV Challenge, Catholic Destinations, and Spotlight. We're also excited to bring you Deep Light Entertainment's Building a Difference, as well as continue this summer's new series, Christian Witness into the fall. The Fall Season brings that and so much more! Watch the video to learn about everything we have planned:
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world are already arriving in Rio, eager to be envigorated in their faith by our truly paternal spiritual leader, Pope Francis.

Teens and young adults are sure to be touched by the experience of oneness and unity they will encounter there. They will have sensory experiences of a diverse, universal Church, and the experience will probably never leave them. The event will be a witness to all people of the true nature of of our pilgrim Church, which seeks to take up the cross and be Christ to a broken world.

In light of the extension of this indulgence to those who participate via media, please join us for our coverage of this inspiring celebration. We'll be covering World Youth Day starting July 22nd with the arrival of the Pope.

Father Reed will be joined by Alexis Grace Richard for desk coverage, and Emily Abi-Kheirs, a local pilgrim, will be our embedded reporter in Rio. Our coverage will be augmented from pictures, tweets, and videos submitted by using the hashtag #CTVWYD13 on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube (so make sure you tell your loved ones who are attending to send us their content!).

We can't wait to bring you coverage of the Masses, the Way of the Cross, and more from World Youth Day. We hope you join us! And we encourage you to go to Confession and receive communion during World Youth Day (7/22-7/28) so you can benefit from the indulgence.

God bless, and see you next week!
We all slip in late to Mass occasionally, and sometimes we even feel the itch to leave early (like right after Communion). So let's hear what Bishop Coyne has to say about arriving late and leaving early to Mass.
This doesn't mean forcing our beliefs on others; it means letting our gospel-informed voices be heard and it means promoting the principles of human dignity that the gospels teach us.

That's why the U.S. bishops have called a second Fortnight for Freedom. In addition to the August 1st deadline for Catholic organizations to comply with the HHS mandate, we also await a Supreme Court ruling on marriage this June, and meaningful immigration reform as well as humanitarian services. These are all areas in which Catholics have a stake and about which Catholics must make their positions known. Starting on June 21st, the bishops are calling for Catholics to participate in a two week period of prayer and action to build awareness about potential religious freedom violations and the right place of religion in the public square.

Throughout these two weeks, CatholicTV will have special programming for the Fortnight for Freedom, including the Opening Mass on 6/21 LIVE at 7pm ET (watch on www.CatholicTV.com), daily reflections from Father Reed, following the 3pm Divine Mercy Chaplet, and the Closing Mass on Independence Day at 12pm ET.

Last year we held a town hall forum hosted by Cardinal Seán O'Malley, with a panel comprising Kim Daniels, JD, a religious liberty attorney, Dr. Angela Franks, co-host of Christian Witness, and John Garvey, JD, President of The Catholic University of America. Most of the concerns raised and questions asked last year are still relevant. You can watch the whole thing right here:
The plan ("Disciples in Mission") "seeks to revitalize the Church in Boston by positioning our parishes more solidly for the task of evangelization, the work of reaching out to our brothers and sisters and drawing them more fully to Christ Jesus." (from the Disciples in Mission proposal).

The pastoral plan (currently in phase one) strengthens local churches by establishing parish collaboratives that function under the leadership of one pastor with the support of Pastoral Teams and Parish Councils. The parishes in the collaboratives maintain their unique identities and responsibilities, while also enjoying the added benefit of a community of support from the other parishes in the collaborative, as well as a unity of vision and evangelical purpose. Parishes maintain the strengths they already have while being fortified by fellow parishes.

By empowering local churches to strengthen and unify as tools for evangelization, the Archdiocese expects that we will move from a state of simply maintaining parishes to being true disciples in mission, proactively spreading the gospel by way of the local Church.

Bishop Deeley, Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Boston, appeared on CatholicTV's This is the Day to talk about the success of the plan so far as pastors in phase one finish up their two week training. He also has some great ideas for how lay people can support the new pastoral plan. Check out his interview below:

The Moment drawns on many of the standard USA procedural elements. It’s aspirational and upbeat—what could be more pleasant than seeing good people get another chance to accomplish their life goals? Friends and family are front and center—the dreamers are nominated by relatives, and, in the two episodes that I’ve seen, the love and support of friends and family is key to their success. The second-chancers are all talented—they’d have to be to take photographs for Sports Illustrated, drive on the NASCAR truck circuit, or skipper an America’s Cup vessel—and they’re mentored by seasoned pros.

There is, in other words, a wholesomeness to the show that’s sometimes hard to find in reality television. And though faith and religion aren’t specifically mentioned in the first two episodes, executive producer Charlie Ebersol told me that the show is designed to promote Christian values.

It's the week of retired priests at CatholicTV!

Today retired priest Fr O'Regan came all the way from Centerville to celebrate Mass with us. Father O'Regan remembered Monsignor Frank MacFarland in his Mass and for that we are so greatful! Here he is with his sister who joined him for Mass, pictured with Msgr Frank's rosary.

Yesterday we were joined by Fr Cunney who lives over at Regina Cleri, the Archdiocesan residence for retired priests. He was a joy to have and gave a wonderful homily about the significance of fragrant oils, which is perfect for today, the day of the Boston Chrism Mass!

You will see Fr Cunney again on tomorrow's Mass, when Father Reed concelebrates with several priests from Regina Cleri for Spy Wednesday. Watch on CatholicTV and CatholicTV.com LIVE at 9:30am ET, and again at 7pm and 11:30pm.

On Holy Thursday we will premiere a special new Triduum rosary, shot entirely at Regina Cleri, and that will air throughout the Triduum.

Please keep the retired priests of Boston in your prayers! In the Archdiocese of Boston, the Easter collection will be for the sick and retired priests of Boston, and I urge you to consider giving what you can to support these men who have given their lives to serve all of us in the Church.

God bless!CatholicTVhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092796812042812794noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8188558636308295091.post-37951901562909895572013-03-19T15:13:00.001-04:002013-03-19T15:20:10.311-04:00Boston seminarians
It's so wonderful to be able to see the seminarians from St John's Seminary in Brighton at the station here at CatholicTV. Whether it's to attend Father Reed's class on communication and evangelization in the conference room, or to accompany a priest for Daily Mass, they are welcome visitors!

Today Father Ed Riley celebrated Mass for us, and was joined by Deacon Chris Wallace who will, by the grace of God, be ordained this May. Deacon Chris is a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel parish in Quincy.

Before Mass, Father Reed asked Fr Riley to bless our new vestments for Solemnities, and Deacon Chris joined Fr Riley in being the first to wear them!

Hello to all my blogolites.

Rome is crying tears from heaven as the rain
comes down hard. Tim and I went to St.
Peter's Square early in the morning and I am glad we did.

As we entered the square I saw a lone figure
in the distance.

As I approached, I saw a man dressed in a burlap sack
kneeling on the hard stone ground praying.

I suddenly noticed that he had no shoes on and that his
feet were battered and worn. It was
clear that he had walked a lot of miles without shoes.

I watched him for quite a while. People would walk by him or take pictures of
him but he did not look at them.

My
first thought was that he was a beggar because there are a lot of those in
Rome. But he was not asking for
money. I saw a nun give him some coins
and I wondered if I should do the same.
A number of thoughts crossed my mind:
should I give him some money? who was he? was this a scam?

I decided to give him coins but
hesitated. I was nervous to approach
this man who was dirty and very different from me. Then I thought of the readings from the Mass
with the Cardinals yesterday and specifically "love one another".

I made my move. I approached him, held out the coins and he
opened his hand. The coins clang as they
fell into his hand. I thought that was
the end of my meeting with him and began to turn and walk away. But he thanked me and asked where I was from. He told me he was from Assisi. He pulled a pamphlet out of his bag and told
me to love the poor. He again thanked me
and said May God bless you. I walked
away.
